Erybenz acne gel, 5% benzoyl peroxide + 3% erythromycin

Erybenz gel is a topical medicine for acne vulgaris. Each gram contains benzoyl peroxide 5% and erythromycin 3%. This combination gel is applied to acne-affected skin only as directed by a doctor or pharmacist. Erythromycin is a topical antibiotic, so avoid prolonged or inappropriate use and follow the prescribed course.

How to use Erybenz gel for acne

The manufacturer's product information describes gently washing and drying the affected skin, then applying a thin layer of gel. It describes morning and evening use, or use as directed by a doctor. Follow the leaflet supplied with your current pack and your clinician's instructions; do not increase the amount or frequency on your own. Wash your hands after applying.

Pack preparation and storage

The manufacturer's leaflet for this presentation describes two separate 20 g gels and an empty mixing jar. It instructs users to combine the gels in the supplied jar before treatment. The manufacturer states that unmixed tubes should be stored below 25°C; after mixing, keep the jar refrigerated at 2–8°C and use within two months. Keep away from children.

Important precautions

• For external use only. Keep away from the eyes, nose, mouth and other mucous membranes.
• Do not use if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin or an ingredient in the product.
• Dryness, redness, peeling or other skin reactions may occur. Stop and contact a healthcare professional if a severe reaction develops.
• Benzoyl peroxide may bleach hair and coloured fabrics. Let the gel dry and avoid contact with towels, clothing and bedding.
• Using other topical acne products at the same time may increase irritation. Ask a healthcare professional before combining treatments.
• The manufacturer's leaflet says safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established; use only if a doctor considers it essential.
