Body Care Guide: Cleanse, Moisturise, Exfoliate & Protect

Body care is often treated as an afterthought compared with facial skincare, but the same basic principles apply: cleanse without stripping, moisturise according to how dry the skin is, exfoliate only when it is useful and protect exposed skin from the sun.

1. Showering should clean the skin—not leave it tight

Very hot water, long showers and harsh cleansers can worsen dryness. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short showers with warm water and a gentle cleanser, especially for dry or sensitive skin.

You do not need to create a thick lather from neck to ankle every time. Focus cleanser where sweat, sunscreen, deodorant and dirt actually accumulate.

2. Moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp

Applying moisturiser soon after showering helps trap water in the skin. Lotions are lighter; creams and ointments generally hold more moisture and are more useful when skin is very dry.

Ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides, petrolatum, dimethicone, urea or hyaluronic acid can be useful depending on the formula and skin need. Fragrance-free products are often easier to tolerate when the skin is sensitive.

3. Exfoliation is optional, not mandatory

Body scrubs and exfoliating acids can help with rough texture, but over-exfoliation can create irritation. If your skin is dry, stinging or inflamed, moisturising is usually more important than scrubbing.

For persistent rough bumps, ingrown hairs or keratosis-pilaris-like texture, targeted products containing ingredients such as lactic acid, salicylic acid or urea may be more predictable than aggressive physical scrubbing.

4. Deodorant and antiperspirant solve different problems

Deodorant helps control odour; antiperspirant reduces sweat. Sensitive underarms may react to fragrance, alcohol or repeated shaving. If irritation is persistent, pause the irritating product and choose a simpler formula.

5. Do not forget exposed body skin

Arms, shoulders, chest, hands and legs can receive significant UV exposure. When these areas are exposed, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is part of body care too. Reapply during extended outdoor exposure and after swimming or heavy sweating.

When dryness is more than “just dry skin”

Dryness that cracks, bleeds, burns, itches persistently or does not improve with a simple routine can reflect eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis or another condition. That is the point to seek dermatological assessment.

A simple body-care routine

Daily: gentle cleanse → moisturise damp skin → deodorant/antiperspirant as needed → SPF on exposed areas.

Occasionally: exfoliation only if your skin benefits from it.

Persistent rash, severe itching, pain, cracking or bleeding should be assessed rather than repeatedly covered with cosmetic products.
