The Right Order for a Skincare Routine — Without Overcomplicating It

A skincare routine does not become better because it has more steps. In fact, using too many active products at once is one of the easiest ways to create irritation, dryness and confusion about what is actually helping.

The basic order is simpler than social media makes it look

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a straightforward sequence: cleanse, apply medication or treatment, then moisturiser and/or sunscreen, followed by makeup if desired. The exact routine can be adapted to your skin, but the logic stays the same.

Morning: protect

  1. Cleanse gently if your skin needs it.
  2. Use one targeted serum or treatment if it has a clear job.
  3. Moisturise according to your skin type.
  4. Apply sunscreen as the final skincare step.

If your sunscreen is sufficiently moisturising for your skin, you may not need a separate morning moisturiser.

Evening: cleanse and treat

  1. Remove makeup and sunscreen thoroughly without aggressive scrubbing.
  2. Apply your treatment—retinoid, acne treatment, pigment serum or other targeted product—according to its instructions.
  3. Finish with moisturiser when needed.

Where do toner, essence and eye cream go?

They are optional. Toners and essences can add hydration or active ingredients, but they are not mandatory steps. Eye cream is usually a specialised moisturiser; if your regular moisturiser is comfortable around the eye area and the formula is suitable, a separate product may not be necessary.

Do not stack every active ingredient

Retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide and strong vitamin C formulas can all be useful, but using several irritating actives together can overwhelm the barrier. Introduce new products one at a time so you know what your skin tolerates.

When the barrier is irritated, simplify

Burning, persistent stinging, unusual tightness, flaking and sudden sensitivity are signs to scale back. A temporary routine of gentle cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen is often more sensible than adding another “repair” active.

Build around your skin concern

Browse Face Care and choose products by need—hydration, acne, pigmentation, sensitivity—not by how many steps you can fit into the bathroom shelf.
