A good grooming routine does not need to be complicated. Most men can cover the essentials with a gentle cleanser, a shaving routine that does not irritate the skin, appropriate hair and beard care, deodorant and sunscreen.
The useful question is not “How many products should I use?” but “What job does each product do?”
1. Start with a gentle cleanse
Cleanse the face once or twice a day according to your skin type and lifestyle. If your skin feels tight after washing, the cleanser may be too harsh or you may be cleansing too often. Oily or acne-prone skin can still become irritated by aggressive scrubbing.
2. Shave with the direction of hair growth
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wetting the skin and hair before shaving, using a shaving cream or gel, and shaving in the direction the hair grows. A sharp, clean blade and light pressure help reduce razor burn and bumps. Rinse the razor after each stroke and let it dry fully between uses.
If your skin is very sensitive, acne-prone or prone to ingrown hairs, an electric razor or a different blade setup may be easier to tolerate.
3. After shaving, calm the skin rather than “disinfecting” it
Strong alcohol-heavy aftershaves can sting and dry sensitive skin. A simple fragrance-light or fragrance-free balm or moisturiser is often a better choice when the skin feels tight or irritated after shaving.
4. Beard and scalp care need different products
A beard is hair growing from facial skin, so both the hair and the skin underneath matter. Wash it regularly, avoid heavy buildup and use beard oil or conditioner if the hair is coarse or the skin beneath becomes dry.
For the scalp, choose shampoo according to the problem: oiliness, dandruff, sensitivity or hair thinning. Persistent itching, scaling, redness or sudden hair loss deserves professional assessment rather than endless product switching.
5. Deodorant and antiperspirant are not the same thing
Deodorants mainly target odour; antiperspirants reduce sweat by temporarily reducing perspiration at the application site. If regular products irritate the underarms, look for simpler formulas and avoid applying immediately after aggressive shaving.
6. SPF belongs in men’s grooming too
Sun protection is not a cosmetic extra. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on exposed skin helps reduce UV damage and photoaging. If you dislike heavy creams, choose a lighter fluid or gel texture that you will actually use.
A simple daily routine
Morning: cleanse if needed → moisturiser if needed → SPF → deodorant/antiperspirant.
Shaving days: warm water → shaving gel/foam → shave with the grain → soothing balm/moisturiser.
Hair/beard: cleanse according to need, not habit alone.
